UPDATE: December 31, 2009
Darius is finished with his chemo treatments; however, is having
daily radiation treatments, on his neck at the moment. The treatments
will continue in various parts of his body. These treatments are
difficult for him, not to mention his grandmother driving him to
Christiana Cancer Center daily. The doctors are hoping he can return
to school before spring. He continues to attend fifth grade via webcam
and is doing very well in his studies.
UPDATE: December 2, 2009
Darius is finished with him chemo treatments and will begin his 14
radiation treatments. He is online with his class now.
UPDATE: November 2, 2009
Please pray for Darius. While he was at A.I. duPont today (Monday,
11-02-09) for his scheduled pulmonary function test, he turned bluish,
developed a fever and a headache. They admitted him and are taking
cultures to determine the cause for this sudden change.
UPDATE: October 21, 2009
Please pray for Darius. He will receive a chemo treatment today.
The treatments have left him feeling very poorly. On Monday, November
2 he will receive an Echo Cardiogram and a Pulmonary Function test. On
Wednesday, November 4, he will receive another PET Scan. Please pray
for good results for these critical tests, and for the technology
connections to go smoothly to get him connected to the classroom via
webcam type equipment.
UPDATE: September 16, 2009
Darius' PET Scans have been very good. His doctor has taken him
off of the steroid and he no longer has to be hospitalized for his
chemo treatments. Mr. Howell is working on installing technology in
his home that will enable him to see his teachers teach certain
subjects. He should conclude chemo in November and may be able to
return to school after that.
Please pray for Darius. The new chemo he is on is more difficult
to tolerate. He does not feel well after these treatments.
UPDATE: August 24, 2009
Darius just completed his fourth round of chemo treatments. He
will not be able to return to school until after the chemo treatments
are finished, which may be November. We are hoping to find creative
ways to keep him where his 5th grade classmates are academically.
He would love visits from his Bethany friends. You may call his
grandmother at 610-932-2162.
UPDATE: July 23, 2009
Praise God! Darius' blood work in NC was good and he was able to
cease his injections, and did not have to return for more blood work.
He will return to A.I. duPont to begin his third round of chemo on
Monday, July 27.
UPDATE: July 20, 2009
Praise the Lord; your prayers are answered! They made it to the
Family Reunion! Darius, his grandmother and many other Philadelphia
area family members formed a caravan (a 15 passenger van, two 7
passenger vans and a car) and drove through to Wilkesboro, North
Carolina. They arrived this afternoon to join many other family
members from all over America for their annual family reunion. Mrs.
Montgomery will take Darius to the hospital Tuesday in Wilkesboro to
have his blood-work done. They will fax the results to A.I. duPont.
Darius' doctors will then determine if Mrs. Montgomery can cease from
giving him his daily injections. Darius fell down the stairs the day
before he left. Please pray for his health and that his sore back will
prove to be just a bruise.
UPDATE: July 12, 2009
Darius will go to A.I. Outpatient on Monday 7/13 for medication.
Continue to pray that he will remain healthy this week as the plan is
to leave for North Carolina next weekend.

UPDATE: July 10, 2009
Mrs. McCullough went to visit Darius on Friday and took this
picture of him with his dog, Tucker.
UPDATE: July 8, 2009
PRAISE GOD!
Darius had another PET scan and it revealed that the tumor in his
spleen is completely gone! His other tumors are shrinking. He has had
his second round of chemo and is home and able to have visitors. The
phone number is (610) 932-2162. The plan is still to go to the reunion
in North Carolina. They will leave July 19. Please pray!
Thank You from
Kitty Montgomery and Darius
Dear Bethany Family,
Darius and I want to give you our heart-felt thanks for all that you
have done for us. The spiritual, emotional and financial support...
everything you have done is so very greatly appreciated.

Darius and Tucker |
We
cannot express enough to you how you are helping us through this
difficult time. The visits of the children have been especially
encouraging to Darius. I see his spirits lift after a friend has been
here to visit. Your friendship has truly lifted our spirits. We will
be forever grateful for your outpouring of love and support to us.
Love,
Kitty and Darius Montgomery
UPDATE: July 2, 2009
Mrs. Holcomb visited Darius on Wednesday. He should be in A.I.
duPont for at least another week. His chemo has been delayed until at
least Monday. Please pray for him to be cleared of the bacteria in his
blood.
Visits from friends are encouraged. Please call the hospital at
302-651-5227. His room number is still 3205.
Directions to the
hospital are on this website. |

In the photos you can see that Darius has been busy making weapons from
sheets of computer paper. He found a website to learn this.
His new
friend, Cyrus, also in the photos, visited him for the first time last
night and seemed fascinated with Darius' skill. This gun actually
shoots paper bullets.
In the Old Testament Darius and Cyrus were both
Persian Kings. Ezra 4:5 says, "They hired counselors to work against
them and frustrate their plans during the entire reign of Cyrus king
of Persia and down to the reign of Darius king of Persia." Kings
need to know how to defend their people. |
Darius is an outdoors boy. Spending the summer in bed between home and
the hospital is difficult for him. Please pray for his grandmother,
Catherine's, health as well. She does not leave his side.

UPDATE: June 30, 2009
Darius is back at A.I. duPont. There was an issue with a recent
blood test. His room number is C3North, room 3205. His phone number to
call before you visit is 302-651-5227. He will be out of his room for
tests off and on, so please call before you visit. He loves to receive
visits from his friends; it really boosts his spirits. The current
plan is to begin his second round of chemo this Friday. Please pray
that that will go well for him. |

UPDATE: June 25, 2009
Darius is now at home. His grandmother is a nurse so is able to
administer the shots and medicine that he needs daily. He can remain
at home as long as his temperature remains normal and he does not have
any complications.
At this point, his family reunion in North Carolina
is still an option for him. Please pray that he will remain well for
that. He is able to have visitors.
If you would like to set up a
visit,
you may call his grandmother,
Catherine Montgomery at (610)
932-2162. |

UPDATE: June 16, 2009
Mrs. Lewis and Mrs. Holcomb visited Darius. He is no longer on
oxygen, his lungs are clearing and he seems to have come through his
first round of chemo without difficulty. His room is amazingly
decorated with cards and posters from BCS.
He is able to walk down to the cafeteria for his dinner, giving him
more freedom. He was in good spirits.
There is a possibility that he will be released on Friday so call
(302) 651-4000 and ask for room 3207 to see if he is still there.
His grandmother is a nurse and can give necessary medicines at home.
Darius was thrilled to have Bethany friends visit. Noah, Evan, Robert,
Peter and Keegan have visited him as well as several staff members.
His visits from his friends clearly lifted his spirits. He will
continue to need prayers, visits and cards over the summer.

UPDATE: June 14, 2009
Darius did have his first chemo treatment. He has a succession of 3
days of treatments every 21 days. He'll have one tonight and tomorrow
night. His temp is still spiking to above 101.
The Dunns, Sturges and Brice Stewart have all been down to see him. He
loves beef jerkey and anything that has to do with outdoors survival,
i.e. books, kits, etc.

UPDATE: June 12, 2009
Darius has developed pneumonia and has a fever. They cannot begin
chemo until his temperature is down. His chemo treatments last three
days and are to be administered every 21 days for eight treatments.
This schedule could possibly enable him to attend his Family Reunion
in North Carolina. This event is a highlight of Darius' year and he
does not want to miss it. Please pray that he will be strong
enough to attend the reunion and that his treatment schedule will
enable him to do that.
UPDATE: June 10, 2009
Dear Parents,
We have received an update on Darius’ condition. He has been diagnosed
with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in his neck, chest and spleen. Hodgkin’s has a
very high cure rate in children; however, he will most likely be very
sick before he gets better. He will begin chemo this week. Expectation
is for Darius to be at A.I. DuPont until next week and to travel back
and forth to treatments after that.
Please continue your prayers for
Darius throughout the summer and check our website. We will post new
updates here for you and your children to follow.
Many parents have
asked what they can do to help Mrs. Montgomery and Darius. Two
parents suggested the school take a donation and purchase WaWa and
other gift cards that they can use for gas and necessities to go
back and forth to treatments throughout the summer.
If you would like to
participate in this collection, please send your donation with your
child Thursday or Friday. If you send a check, make it out to Bethany
Christian School and specify Darius in the memo section of your check.
God bless you,
L. Linda Lewis
Principal
